Study in Canada under a study permit

The process of obtaining a study permit in order to study in Canada is a step-by-step process:

Step 1
The first step is to find a Canadian school that has the right study program and is aligned with your goals. Throughout the 10 provinces (and two territories) of Canada there are over 1,000 designated learning institutions that host international students.

Step 2
The second step you must take is receiving a Letter of Acceptance. This letter of acceptance must be from a designated learning institution.

  • Language Requirements – Depending on whether you’re applying for an English-speaking or French-speaking school, you will be required to prove your level of English through tests such as TOEFL, IELTS or CAEL and (in the case of French) through the DELF. Some schools also utilize their own language proficiency tests.
  • Entrance Requirements – Each designated learning institution has the right to set their own ad-mission requirements. For more details, contact your chosen designated learning institution.
  • Deadlines – Deadlines for application vary from school to school. Depending on the institution and program, it may takes several weeks – or even months – to receive a decision. This is why you should plan, gather your documents, and apply early. That way you can apply for and obtain your Study Permit in a timely manner.
  • Application – Once you have gathered all your documents, you should contact your chosen school’s admission office to get application information, forms, and nuanced information dead-lines.

Study without a study permit

In most cases if a foreign national wants to study in Canada, he or she must obtain an Canadian study permit. However, there are situations where exemptions may apply:

  • Short study programs – If your program lasts six months or less, you don’t need to obtain an study permit. However, you must complete the course or program within the period that was granted for your stay in Canada.
  •  Foreign representatives in Canada – If you are a family or staff member of a foreign representative in Canada accredited by the Department of Foreign Affairs or Trade and Development Canada, you may not need a study permit in order to study in Canada.   •  Foreign Armed Forces – Member of foreign armed forces under the Visiting Forces Act are also exempt from having to obtain a study permit.
  • Registered Indians in Canada – In case you’re a citizen of another country, but have Registered Indian status in Canada, you don’t need to obtain a study permit.
